Yesteryear Collection



The Cumberland and Westmorland Constabulary was formed in 1856 as a result of the County Borough Police Act. The first Chief Constable was Sir John Dunne and his home in Carlisle was used as the Force Headquarters.
In 1931 the first motor patrol fleet was formed consisting of one Morris Isis motor car, two Morgan three-wheelers and two motor cycles. The Constabulary Headquarters was moved to its present location at Carleton Hall, Penrith in April 1950.
In 1964 the Carlisle City Centre amalgamated.
In 1974 with the amalgamation of Local Authorities, Barrow in Furness and areas of West Yorkshire merged with Cumberland and Westmorland to form the Cumbria Constabulary.
